“THIS CHARMING MAN” INTERVIEW IN BUST MAGAZINE, 2005 |
| Filed Under: Announcements, Justin, Site |
|
|
“I need two so they can cross-pollinate,” Justin Theroux is saying, indicating a pair of blueberry bushes. He gives a rueful nod to the wisteria. “They’ll be dead soon, but so worth it for that glorious smell.” Justin is giving me a tour of the back garden of his N.Y.C. apartment. His jeans are hanging somewhere below his bum crack, and two pit bulls (one deaf) are gnawing at his steel-toed boots. His hair is ice-pond black, he could wash my windows with his eyelashes, and he has that rangy skateboarder’s body that girls never grow out of going hormonal over. He has a truly lovely, orderly garden with the odd decapitated doll scattered about.
It might be debilitating for an untalented guy to be friends with Justin. He paints, writes, acts, and, oh, speaks Chinese. We met when he was doing The Three Sisters on Broadway. Days later he was interpreting between myself and a Chinese gentleman off Canal Street who was certain he could cure my flu. Justin minored in Chinese at Bennington (under a double major in painting and drama), and traveled to China to “do something far away.” The 33-year-old actor says he always pictured himself in New York, in some crappy apartment, throwing paint on a wall or doing black box theater. Didn’t see himself getting rich, just hopefully making some art.
You might know Justin from David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, or the HBO series Six Feet Under, where he has given wonderfully compelling performances that make you wish the camera would zoom in on his every atom and follow him off screen. Soon he will be seen in the film The Baxter, a comedy he flat-out steals, and next year he is teaming with Lynch again for a film that is, he tells me happily, “so psychotically weird that I can’t even bear describing it.” He seems perfectly suited to Lynch’s Cubist realities, where to construct a moment might destroy its lyric possibility. Some things, and people, are better left within the outlines of their enigma.
Women love Justin. My demure mother, with only a glass of champagne as an excuse, once turned to him on my sofa, aimed her high beams on him, and offered him a coy and wobbly “meow.” He has this anachronistic sexiness. He could have gunned up a motorbike in Quadrophenia, and, unless you were a devout Jehovah’s Witness, you would get on without a helmet or proper birth control. He might have been some moody, nimble goat herder that your pater forbade you to trip the grassy knoll with. He seems to be from somewhere else, on his way through, but not rushing. He is passionate but not pretentious, with a massive intellect and a neon, macabre sense of humor. Men don’t get funnier or smarter, period. His kindness is profound. I can watch him from my apartment’s window, cooing to his snapdragons, the sweetest mess of contradictions in a leather jacket.
